Touring!

Post by The Hawkster on 17/7/2013, 13:19

Mornin' All!

Thought I'd do up this thread!

Any of you done much travelling by bike? *Outside of Boss & PMPT's quick trips to the shops for booze and chocolate - I wouldn't exactly call that a "tour" - unless of course they hit the pubs on the way, knowing them, they never made it to the off'ies!* Wink

Anyway, I'm hoping to purchase a touring bike and get myself underway throughout this great country of Canada and then Europe!

Anyone got any tips for buying a touring bike on a budget? Of say, around 600 Canadian Dollars?

Cheers!

Boss? On a bike? You've got to be joking! raz

The only bikes I know something about are ones with fast engines. Sorry. Wink

I cycle to and from work, you can do the journey via StreetView here : https://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=mill+rise+Windermere,+Cumbria,+United+Kingdom&daddr=54.3791921,-2.9013536+to:Unknown+road&hl=en&ll=54.381557,-2.853527&spn=0.054285,0.169086&sll=54.376808,-2.821126&sspn=0.006786,0.021136&geocode=FfWyPQMdftLT_ymbb4DhmJR8SDFE8a1nNGZjkg%3BFbjCPQMdl7rT_ylrholIvZR8SDHtCDBowPPyMw%3BFZu6PQMdOQvV_w&mra=dme&mrsp=2&sz=16&via=1&t=m&z=13

I have a TREK 2012 7.5 DISC which has been fine for me, but the cost here was £720 new.
18 gears, comfortable position and bar grips, the only downside being there are a lot of tapered or shaped tubes on the frame that make fastening lamps etc. difficult... although it helps keep the weight down, and is not insurmountable!

A good tourer has all terrain tyres and a light frame which has the ability to carry a good set of saddle bags. 12 gears would be the minimum I would be looking for.

It is not just the number of gears, it is the spacing of the different ratios.
I had a 21 speed, now I have 18 - and the 18 are better spaced... close in low gears for hills, then wider at the top end for downhills!

Also the gear change is more slick, especially when changing going UP hills, when it needs to be quick, before you lose momentum and the time needed to derail to the next cog.

I also went from brake blocks to hydraulic discs. The blocks were superb - but the discs are more controllable and effective in the wet - once you get used to them.
They also make getting the wheel out and in quicker if you have a puncture.

Best approach is to hire a bike from a good shop and see what you like or dislike about it - then look for what you can afford to change.

I couldn't even if I was wearing jeans and t-shirt, I got kicked in the head during a game, shortly after I was riding a mates scooter and couldn't stay upright- ever since I've not been able to balance

believe it or not It's true

I believe you. Its something to do with what they call the inner ear which corrects balance. Get it damaged and your balance goes. Affects a lot of pensioners, as you get old so the inner ear degenerates. Thats why pensioners need those walking frames.

Part of the yearly medical for tube drivers is to check for this. You have to stand on one leg for a minute. If you cant, your balance has been affected.
