Every thoroughbred horse in the world, whether a racehorse or not, can be traced back to one of three founding stallions.

The phrase “raining cats and dogs” originated in seventeenth-century England. During heavy rainstorms, many homeless animals would drown and float down the streets, giving the appearance that it had actually rained cats and dogs (I copied that one Razz )

The side view of the Titanic clearly showed four funnels.
Three of these released the exhaust from the boiler fires and used steam from the engines, the fourth funnel was just for show.
The ships architects thought the ship would look more impressive with four funnels rather than three.

It was just for show, however it was used for storage and for excess steam.

The phrase "rule of thumb" is derived from an old English law which stated that you couldn't beat your wife with anything wider than your thumb.

The whole nine yards relates to the amount of ammo carried on board WW2 fighters, to give someone the whole 9 yards meant you'd given them everything you had

Where as the phrase's to buy the farm and barnstormers were both to do with WW1 veterans and the flying circuses that sprang up in America, they'd often set up on farms and a favorite trick was to fly their biplane through the open doors at each end of the barn - storm the barn so to speak

when it went wrong and the plane crashed often wiping out the barn etc it was common practice to pay for damages hence if you crashed you'd bought the farm

The saying "it's so cold out there it could freeze the balls off a brass monkey" came from when they had old cannons like ones used in the Civil War. The cannonballs were stacked in a pyramid formation, called a brass monkey. When it got extremely cold outside they would crack and break off.

When escalators were installed on the london underground, a man with a wooden leg was employed to show people how to use them.

Wood Lane station on the Central Line London Underground is the only station that has ever had a movable platform. At the time, Wood Lane was the end of the Central Line. Trains came westbound, stopped in the station. The platform then moved which exposed the eastbound rails. The train could then travel back east.

Wood Lane is also the station used for most of the Dr Who stories where an underground scene was needed. The BBC centre being just across the road.

Its been demolished now to make way for the new Westfields shopping centre. The platforms remain though.

When Sir Arthur Conan-Doyle killed Holmes off at Reichenbach Falls he received death threats from fans

and 22B Baker street was for many years a bank, they had an employee who was Holmes's "secretary" and dealt with any letters sent to him- many of which were from the parents of missing children begging for him to investigate their disappearance.
