Mobile Phone Recommendations.

Post by Girl*Next*Door on 13/8/2013, 16:16

Right, I have decided that I need to be looking at getting a new phone. Partly for work, partly because my current one is a bit crap. The last one I had before my current one (Samsung Ch@t) was a Sony Ericsson W800i. I know, old but it lasted me years and was as tough as old boots, even surviving being dropped from the back of my horse on to concrete a couple of times, being dropped in to a glass of water by accident (don't ask), dropped countless times thanks to my dog and various other things that you shouldn't do with mobile phones.

For that reason, it needs to be something hardwearing. I would probably keep my current one for yard use though.

I am a twat with technology so I'm not sure I'd manage anything complicated to use. Because of work, I am needing access to the internet a lot more than usual so one with decent capability in regards to browsing the internet, accessing emails, Facebook (work related, I'm not some saddo Facebook obsessive Razz) would be good.
One with a semi-decent camera would be a bonus, again, work related.

Apart from that, as long as it makes calls and sends and receives texts then I'm happy. I have a preference for Sony Ericsson over other brands but I'm open to suggestions.

So, recommendations please? Very Happy Thank you!

The latest Samsung Galaxy range is pretty good, especially for internet and camera use.

I have had an iphone 4S for about a year now and its so much better than any other phone i have owned. Its been dropped many times without getting damaged. I had a choice of the iphone 4S or the iphone 5. The iphone 5 I found to be not as good as the iphone 4, with only the new 4G service a reason to buy. I dont need to be able to have the constant stream to watch TV capability the iphone 5 has though. I cant see the point of my buying the iphone 6 when it comes out as the new toys it will have will be of no use to me. There is rumours of a plastic cased iphone due out as well. This will be a cheaper end of the market phone.

Apple make great products, but their innovation seems to have died with Steve Jobs. The iPhone 5S (as it'll probably be called) is, according to most stuff on the interwebs, not going to be a huge upgrade over the 5. The 6 may be a big advancement next year (we'll have to wait and see), but the top end Android phones will have advanced as well by then. That said I'll certainly be having a good look at it when I'm due my next upgrade.

GND, from what you've said it sounds like a Sony Xperia Z would do you fine. I've had mine a few months now, I'm not great with tech stuff either, but I can't fault mine. Good screen and camera (one of the best about at the moment apparently), robust and waterproof (plenty of clips on Youtube of it being dropped, used under water, etc, and causes it no problems).

One thing you should consider is the sim card. There are three types of size at the moment. The normal ones we have come to know and love. Mini sims which took over for a short while and now the Micro sims. As the phones are getting bigger again, the sim cards are getting smaller. So its likely your current sim card will not fit a new phone. This will mean getting the mobile company your with to swop over the number?

A colleague has a 5, and he's had to have it replaced twice due to the faulty on/off button issue. For this reason, I don't want a 5S.

I'm hoping the 6 is a complete redesign.

I don't think different sized SIMs are an issue. When I got my iPhone, they gave me a new mini SIM and transferred my number over. Took a few hours from start to finish.

Absolutely right. I had this issue with my last upgrade, the new mini SIM came with a code to put in on my providers website. Instructions said it could take up to a few hours for the number to transfer, but I think that was them just covering themselves, as it was done and new phone working in about 20 mins.

In any case you can buy SIM cutters on Ebay for only a couple of quid or so to convert a standard sim to a mini, the only difference between the 2 is the amount of plastic surrounding the chip.

I've had an iPhone 4 for over 2 1/2 years, never gone wrong, and now ona cheap monthly rolling contract.
Mrs Plod got a galaxy s4 mini, last week.
Not as slick as the iPhone in my opinion.
But the free music on t torrent is keeping her quiet.
Better speakers than the 4.
Just seems a bit flimsy in the hand, than the 4.
The Sony and windows phones are crap

It gets charged up every night, and will last all day.
I do all my emails and banking on it, along with all the farce book and chat sites stuff, music, radio, tv catchup, personal photos, the list goes on.
I feel naked going out, without it.
And the wife deals with my other needs!.

I love using my Android. Always does what I need to do when I need it. And I love using it as a hotspot for my laptop when there is no wireless connections available. In all honesty, a phone is a phone...but it does depend on experience and preference.

I have the Iphone 4S for two years now. Best phone I have owned. Easy for an old git like me to use. Best bit is the long lasting battery. Charge overnight and it lasts a day.

My daughter has the Galaxy S4. One of the first to get one on contract. She loves it, but I hate it. She lets her children play with it and my number is on her speed dial. So her children are always cold calling me!

get am iPhone 4S, but don't get a 5. very functional and intuitive to use. blackberry will
always exist. they're the most secure devices going and they're loved by lots of business and crinal
types. iPhones in a case will stay protected. the 4s is very hardy now anyway.
