Death of a forum.

Post by BossHogg on 20/8/2013, 08:05

It is with great sadness that I have to announce that the HATO forum "National Traffic" has closed. In its heyday, NT was a very busy site, however, over the last few years numbers had drastically dwindled. I'd like to extend my gratitude and thanks to falkor the site admin for providing the site in the first place for us traffic officers and to say he will always be welcome to join us here at online exiles. salute

I can imagine that running a forum is a great commitment. especially those who do it for free. I've been invited to some forums and declined. one of them 'close protection world' looked busy and sleek and sexy and informative. it's hardly posted on with any meaning except advertising and networking. shame about some of them really

Saw the email this morning. It came as a surprise but not unexpected sadly.

I have good memories there, as it was the first forum I got a (short) ban from. Very Happy Wink

It has bad memories also, as it's how I got to know Boss! affraid

All the best Falkor.

I was briefly a member on the Prison service one, I seem to remember being welcomed and all my stupid questions about joining answered without a condescending pat on the head *cough*policespecials*cough*

a real shame

I'd have liked a unique url for here and to go independent but I haven't got the time, knowledge or wallet to make it work. Plus I'd have to manually transfer every post as I don't physically own the data base. Sad

Your own address, a hosting company, a server, storage for back up and the knowledge to repair it when it breaks down. That's the beauty of my current set up, all the technical stuff is done by someone else. Wink

Interesting to know, everything would have to be in place before going live. I'd have to keep the same name as that's the unique selling point of the forum. minus forumotion of course. Wink

Im not surprised thoughm that the prison officers forum has closed down as MOJ were really getting pissed off with this forum, however its the age old saying that the truth hurts and they dont like the truth coming out in a public domain, so glad i left the prison service lol

Re: Death of a forum.

Post by BossHogg on 22/8/2013, 18:48

To be perfectly honest, I'm not sure, I've been offered this by the admin of the RMP forum but I don't know what it entails?

If you ever do decide to go solo I could probably sort you out some hosting for nowt. You'd still need a domain name, of course, but, unless you want something fancy, that shouldn't cost you more than about £15 PA.

That's the deep end though, pal, you'd get a blank server and the rest would be up to you. I'd help you if you got stuck, of course, but I've not enough spare time to get into installing forum software or whatever.

Anyway, offer's there as/when/if you decide to take the plunge.

Take it easy,
I know MB is good with that side of things, it's a little idea which has got massive potential, I just don't want to go solo and get lumbered with a load of debt I can ill afford. Wink

I'm looking at ways of transferring every post across to a new forum or would I have to start from scratch. The problem being I don't own the forum data base - the owner does and I can't take it with me.

I think you need to be careful boss. I think if we all
chip in to buy a domain name it would be about fifty pence each as you can buy a domain for sod all really. like you say it's the maintainer and technical aspects that are a worry. relying on fo
members is good but if they leave you're screwed aren't you so you're in the realms of hiring a geek which can be expensive.

yep, there's lot of options and I think going solo is one for the future if the forum era that big you'll have to invite advertising in etc. but that's a long long way away and a bridge to be burnt later

Spicey raises some interesting points.

Boss, I guess the next step is to investigate the process of becoming independent (costs, what's involved etc). I'm sure you know enough forum admins who could advise you?

Obviously there's no rush but it should be something to consider?

You'll find plenty of support here, you only have to ask. As you know, my technical ability doesnt stretch beyond kicking it and switching it on and off. Wink
